Mr. T N Chowdhury (Electronic LPG optimum burning system - Sensored and Auto)
Earth Care Awards 2008 Award Night

Award Category:
Innovation for Climate Protection.

The patent office of the Government of India (A – KOL/180) dated 21.10.2005 grants patent to the innovation. With reference to the IS 4246 burner of the 64 per cent known thermal efficiency, the present system by its form and function is designed to imply a reduction of LPG consumption to 131 gm/hr from 189 gm/hr.

This is expected to extend the use of LPG and reduce emission intensities caused by burning of fuel; optimum resource utilization through efficient use. It becomes important to understand and promote the application and the innovation especially when the potential to reach out to a large section of the society is additionally implied and at the same time help address market related barriers.

Taraknath has developed an Electronic LPG optimum burning system. It is meant to regulate the flow of gas in the and therefore making efficient use of fuel in the burners used predominantly in domestic gas – cooking system. His innovation has been assessed and granted patent by the patent office of the Government of India (A – KOL/180) on 21.10.2005. The innovation by its form and function is designed to imply a reduction of LPG consumption to 131 gm/hr from 189 gm/hr in these systems. This is expected to extend the use of LPG and reduce emission intensities caused by burning of fuel; optimum resource utilization through efficient use.

It is therefore important to understand and promote the application and the innovation especially when the potential to reach out to a large section of the society is additionally implied and at the same time help address market related barriers.

ONGC
ONGC’ s has introduced a waste heat recovery project, a flare gas recovery project, a gas flaring reduction project and many other initiatives which have resulted in reduction of CO2 emission by approximately 1 million tons of CO2 per annum.

The technology adopted by ONGC for its Gas Flaring Project at its Uran project is the first of its kind and for this ONGC. In addition, ONGC has also taken up a number of community development projects for community awareness with respect to climate change.

Welspun
Welspun’s energy efficiency and fuel switchover project involves installation of an energy efficient 5.9 MW gas turbine with a Waste heat recovery system and vapor absorption chillers that has helped reduced GHG emissions significantly. In addition, Welspun has taken numerous initiatives towards overall development of the society and the environment.

Tata Sponge Iron Limited
Tata Sponge uses the content of kiln gas to generate power in waste heat recovery power plants. The project activity has resulted in the generation of 26MW of electicity from waste gasses for in-house consumption. The company also exports its excess capacity to the local grid resulting in the reduction of GHGs. Tata sponge contributes extensively to local employment and social needs through several other initiatives.

The Vedchhi Pradesh Seva Samiti, (VPSS), Dharampur Center
Earth Care Awards 2008 Award Night

Award Category:
Community Led Actions on Mitigation and Adaptation to climate change.

A Charitable Trust started in 1953. Salient features:
- Work carried out in Dharampur and Kaprada talukas of Valsad district, Gujarat since 1988.
- Covered 231 villages extending over 1650 sq.km including areas in forests.
- Though the region receives about 100 – 150 inches of rainfall, water would run off due to
the hilly terrain. This caused severe water shortage and related stresses of lack of access.

  • To tackle these issues of natural resources management
    • 155 wells and 315 check dams have been constructed
    • 5 underground tanks help harvest about 50,000 to 75,000 litres of watereach
    • Approximately 1700 hectares of land have been reclaimed and diverse crops established
    • A ‘food for work’ programme has helped communities significantly
    • Mango plantations have been established and help generate additional income.
    • Communities have coalesced to learn techniques and implement solutions to overcome locally relevant stresses affecting land and water resources.
    • Efficient alternative use of male buffaloes for farming
  • Funding for activities derived from multiple sources.

- Represents initiatives by community organization with support from diverse sources.
- 20, 250 acres of fallow land have been brought under cultivation; including 772 acres
   of horticulture development

  • More than 500 dried up open wells have been recharged; nearly 2000 bore wells have become functional again; water table has risen significantly in about 20 villages through development of watersheds
  • 9247 hectares of forest area are protected through 5282 members; 6,84,447 saplings / seedlings have been planted in 88 villages
